I like to paint my arms and hands. I’m also always a little surprised at how much of my body I’ve painted.

I’m almost 1! I’m taking 5-6 steps at a time now, I can’t wait until I can run. My eyes used to be blue but now they seem to move between green, blue and brown. I’m a big boy – I’m wearing 18-24 month sized clothes.

We moved back to Austin! While our moms were packing up there were fewer and fewer toys every day. Kai resorted to learning about plumbing while Avi watched.

Caught somewhat by surprise

leave a comment »

Last week, Kai decided to put her hair in the water at the pool.  First the back of her head, then the side of her head. She also started getting her hair wet in the bath with her washcloth.  We were surprised – she usually hates getting her hair wet.

Then, she met a young woman at the coffeehouse and declared that she wanted this woman to come to her house and play. The woman, Eva, mentioned that she worked at a camp and that they probably had space for camp in the upcoming week (this week).  We asked Kai if she wanted to go – she said yes! Another wow – she had not been interested in experiences where Mrs Bean and I weren’t able to accompany her.

This week, she started camp. No crying at dropoff, chatty with the grown ups…what happened? How did this happen? And so quickly? Her vocabulary and understanding of concepts have taken a leap forward too.  It’s great, I’m so pleased that she’s more open to new experiences…it’s been amazing and surprising and sometimes amusing to watch.  It’s also another reminder of how quickly kids change and grow and how we need to remember that nothing at this point is going to be forever.

Middle of the night murmurings

leave a comment »

Cute things Kai will ask, sometimes, when she wakes in the middle of the night:
• mommy? I love you
• don’t you want to come closer to me?

She sleeps with Mrs Bean these days – I’ll spare you the not-so-cure that get said…

Our little dude

Avi is almost 10 months old!  It’s crazy! He can stand up by himself now without holding onto anything and can hang out in standing position for 10+ seconds.  I suppose he’ll be walking soon.  He’s a Menace…we are so in for it.

It’s amazing how much he looks like Kai while at the same time he’s so different from her at the same age:

  • he’s large for his age – he passed 20 lbs a few weeks back and is wearing 18mo-sized clothing.  Kai can still wear her 18mo-sized pants, as shorts.
  • he loves to play with objects – attachment objects this week have included an empty moisturizer pump dispenser, an Atlanta Brave tomahawk, a point and shoot camera
  • he is super squirmy and doesn’t like to sit in laps.  Apparently he has better things to do, like eat shoes.  He LOVES shoes.
  • his first “word” sounds like “yeah!” while Kai’s was “No”

He still only has 2 bottom teeth but there are 4 working their way through his gums up top.  Poor kid…getting 4 teeth at once.

The butter battle of May 6, 2013

leave a comment »

Yesterday Kai wanted to have butter for breakfast. She was very adamant about it. Mrs Bean wanted her to have almond butter or cream cheese on bread first, Kai had eaten too much butter already.  Back and forth, there was yelling and there was crying.  While that was happening, Avi kept me company while I packed a snack for myself.  Finally, Kai and I left for school – she hadn’t eaten breakfast.

While strapping her into her carseat, Kai looks up at me and asks “Did you pack a snack box for just in case? What’s in it? Can I have it?”

…and there went my snack

We parked at school and listened to music while she ate all the crackers in my snack box.

Toy Paradise

with one comment

We went to a friend’s house over the weekend, and they had rooms of toys.  Or rather, multiple rooms in which you could find toys stored or in the open. Kai took awhile to warm up but by the end of the morning, she was so into the rooms for toys that she asked “Can we come back Sometime?!?!” in quite the plaintive/wistful voice.

It was interesting, then, to have an older relatives come by our place and express that she thought we had a lot of toys – I feel that we have the right amount, not too much to take up too much space, just enough that the kids can make a real mess. It made me wonder how many toys I had as a kid, do kids these days just have more toys? What did I do as a kid? Have things changed so much? Or does our relative misremember how much her daughter had as a child? Hmm.

Puppet vs Pinata

leave a comment »

When we passed by a rack of puppets Kai asked if they were for hitting and if candy would come out of them.  I guess that’s what happens when you grow up in Austin where kids have birthday pinatas…
