Week 25 Summary: All’s well

leave a comment »

All is going well.  Mrs Bean is growing – she’s gained 20lbs, which is just right!  The bean is growing and you can tell because Mrs Bean’s belly pops out a little more after each intense hunger/nap cycle.  The baby is really strong and enjoys hanging out with other babies on the inside (aka the lesbian prenatal class).

We’ve scheduled the baby shower (at Aunt Bean’s house) and Mrs Bean’s mom is coming to town for that. Hopefully her sister will be able to come, too.  I’m headed off to New York this week – I’ll miss Mrs Bean and the Bean!

Looking forward to: Why? How come?

leave a comment »

I played in a badminton tournament over the weekend, and one of the players brought his two very cute kids.  His daughter (5, I think) asked some great questions, including:

– why is the 1st place trophy bigger than the 2nd place trophy?  (I told her that it was tradition, that people were used to doing it that way…she pondered that for a bit.)
– how come not everybody gets a trophy? (there were 4 teams, and trophies for the top 2 teams – it was a teeny tournament.  I didn’t get a chance to think of an answer before she was on to her next topic)

I’m know some people find excessive questioning from kids exasperating, but I’m sort of looking forward to it.  I can’t promise I’ll always answer truthfully (heh heh), but I love seeing kids (and adults!) wonder and question, and ponder the answers they get.

100 days left to go

Wow! Only (approx.) 100 days left to go!

Yesterday, the bean spent alot of time flipping and flopping around Mrs Bean’s belly. I think we’re going to have a strong baby 🙂

Week 24 Summary: Chuggin’ Along

leave a comment »

This update is a little late, but here goes…

– Mrs Bean measures 24cm from her pubic bone to the top of her uterus. I think there is a term for this measurement, but I can’t remember what it is. She’s just the right size, according to our midwife
– We’re hopeful that her placenta has moved up. I’m not supposed to jinx it, so I can’t say that it has, and really, we don’t really know. We’re planning on getting an ultrasound around week 28, which is when we’ll make sure her placenta is out of the way
– Mrs Bean’s hormone levels seem to have shifted over the weekend. Either that or she did a great imitation of PMS (for 2 days). I came home one day to find her crying in a stack of fabric…either way, it’s over now, and I’m glad she’s back to her saner, calmer self again. (she’s looking over my shoulder and smiling, so I think she’s okay…right, dear? honey?)
– She’s definitely heavier than me now 😀

When I look at Mrs Bean, it’s obvious she’s pregnant. I just can’t imagine her getting any bigger, but I know she will. I’m wondering if I should pick up some Chinese language CDs from the library (if they have them) so that I can practice chatting with the baby. Or hey, maybe I should start with Spanish. Or start picking up Hebrew. Hrmm.

Week 23 Summary: Ack!

leave a comment »

It’s been a good week, but now that we’re 60% of the way there, I’m getting nervous. Every now and then I feel pretty overwhelmed – I know we’ll get everything we need to get done, done. And I believe that we’ll can manage whatever life throws our way, but it’s the not-knowing that overwhelms me sometimes. I’d like to know for sure that the baby will be healthy and Mrs Bean will do well, but we can’t know that, can we? (I think that reading about the very early arrival of darwinsmommies‘ baby sort of freaked me out a little.)

Sigh. Anyway, again, it’s still hot, and Mrs Bean is still grumpy. I don’t think that’s going to change this summer 🙂 She’s getting bigger – her belly measured 37″ the last time we measured it. That isn’t giving anything away, since we’re not going to play any games at the baby shower. The baby loves to kick! I like talking to the baby, although sometimes I’m a dork, and end up talking to Mrs Bean’s ribs instead…they need conversation too…right?

Last night’s prenatal class was interesting – we talked for a bit about mixed-race/religion/cultural/class households, and what that meant to us, and towards our plans/goals/ideals for our children. I think there’s still alot of discussion and thinking left to do around that, but for the moment, I’m content with the vague idea that our kid will grow up with Jewish religion, some Chinese language, some smattering of Chinese/US/Canadian history, lots of different kinds of foods (of course!), and hopefully a community of people from different cultures and with various interests.

We also talked about our parents last night – about how they shaped us, how their shaping of us can affect how we shape our children, about how self-awareness can help towards being the parent you want to be, rather than being the parents you had. Ugh, major downer. I think that overwhelmed alot of people. I know I’ve been thinking about that for awhile, now.

So much thinking to do!
