Sleep Chaos!

with 4 comments

May 22, 2010 - The first time Kai sleeps in her crib

Somehow, we’ve all gotten alot more tired in the past week or so.  As you can see in the above picture, Kai has the capacity to sleep in her crib…but she’s only slept in it once so far, and it’s been downhill since that day.  In the past week, she’s been extra needy (of the boob, of Mrs Bean) and she has also been waking up at 3 or 4am for 2 or 3 hours, babbling, complaining and refusing to go back to sleep.  When I hold her, she refuses to be inclined in any way – she wants to be upright – no sitting, no leaning against pillow.  We’ve tried teething tablets, infant tylenol and whiskey (just kidding) but it doesn’t seem like she’s awake due to pain.  We think.

I’m assuming this too shall pass, that in a few days/weeks Kai’s nighttime sleeping won’t be as chaotic, and that she’ll settle into and daytime naps more easily.  However, in assuming that this will pass, I really want it to pass SOON!!!

Adoption and Citizenship

with one comment

Our second-parent adoption hearing is less than 2 weeks away!  Although I resent the fact that we had to go through the cost and hassle of doing the adoption, I’m looking forward to being one of Kai’s legal parents.  After we get that done, we’re going to apply for Kai’s passport.  Which brings up a question I haven’t been able to wrangle through yet: can I apply for Canadian citizenship on her behalf?  If so, how?  Most of the information on the Canadian immigration site applies more towards resident couples adopting children from other countries, is it possible to adopt as a non-resident citizen?

I figured that if I post this with enough keywords, perhaps somebody with similar questions (and possibly the answer?) would find this post…

  • the Canadian citizen is living in the US
  • the Canadian citizen is not the birth parent, but will be the adoptive parent
  • we don’t intend on residing in Canada anytime soon, is a residency requirement necessary for (adopted) children?

I don’t think it’s absolutely imperative to figure out how to get her Canadian citizenship, but I do think it may come in handy…I’ve asked some friends of mine who are in the same situation, but the only thing we’ve been able to figure out is that it’s complicated.  Sigh.  I hate this – it all seems more complicated than it should be!

A bio-cousin!

with one comment

Kai has a new cousin!  She was born today over on the east coast, and I’m going to refer to her as V on this blog.  We’ll be meeting her for the first time during the family-gathering-Thanksgiving in November (if not earlier).  The family is growing!

Wriggling and giggling

with 2 comments

Kai is super squirmy these days.  She squirms in our arms, in her sleep, on the floor – everywhere. When she’s sitting, she’ll bounce up and down – crawling is probably coming soon!  That’s both exciting and frightening – how is it that it’s been six months already?  So quickly?  She’s been gnawing on bananas, carrots, green beans and pear.

We’ve made some changes to the house since Kai will soon be moving about on her own.  We got the coffee table out of the house, and we also put our queen-sized bed and mattress in storage.  Mrs Bean found a king sized futon, which we have on the floor in our bedroom.  This means the we can all three sleep together without bumping into each other all night (when I’m not banned because of my snoring).  Kai thinks the entire bed is hers, so Mrs Bean and I are usually sleeping at our respective edges.  Every now and then I wake up when I hit the wall rolling over.  We’re  doing the co-sleeping thing, which I think is the only thing compatible with Kai’s personality and needs – she’s often hungry, she’ll often open her eyes to make sure somebody is near her, and she loves (needs) cuddles.  She has also taken it upon herself to act as our alarm clock – every morning at about 7am, she wakes up smiling, squirmy, and CHATTY!

My bed, all mine!

On the clothes front, I think Kai looks totally cute in her hoodies.  Mrs Bean just picked up a navy blue one, so I’ll need to get a picture of her in that one too.

A funny incident: Mrs Bean was out and about with Kai, who was wearing a blue dress.  An older woman stopped and told Mrs Bean that she thought Kai was such a cute little boy!  Then she realized that Kai was actually wearing a dress, so she corrected herself, while wondering aloud “why would they make a dress in blue?”  As if dresses can’t be blue!  Or that baby clothing should be designed so that they clearly broadcast the kid’s gender!  Hmph!

Getting back on the wagon…

with 2 comments

Are you going to update my blog or not?

Alright…I’ve been delinquent in updating this blog.  What’s been happening?

Well, Kai has been hanging out with friends at playgroups, potlucks, pool time and on regular walks around the lake.  It’s interesting watching 5-6 month olds attempt to play with things at the same time.  I think teaching the idea of “sharing” will be a memorable experience…

Me and my friend.

We’ve started using the jumper.  Kai hasn’t figured out that she can jump in it quite yet.  Instead, she likes to spin around slowly and keep her eye on us.  She also loves the toys that came attached to the jumper and tries to suck the stuffing out of them.

What am I supposed to do in here?

We took Kai to dim sum for the first time, she’s been on a landscape architecture tour (and listened very intently to the presenters) and so much else!  She sure gets around!

Even though she’s not quite 6 months yet, she had her 6 month checkup earlier this week.  She’s at 50th percentile for height, but she’s at 5th percentile for weight.  Our doctor said that she could stand to gain a pound or two, but I don’t think he realizes that Kai squirms SO MUCH that she burns tons of calories off just squirming and kicking throughout the day.  Mrs Bean can’t imagine having to nurse any more than she already does, so perhaps…perhaps we’ll start food?
