The kids, a visual update

with one comment

I have so many photos from the past couple months, it was a little overwhelming to try and go through all of them…so here’s a selection from the latest import from my phone.

9lbs 8oz!

with one comment

At 3 weeks old, Avi is 9lbs and 3oz!  He is much bigger than Kai and didn’t fit in any of the newborn sized clothing we saved for him.  Kai was in NB clothing for 2 months so we figured we should keep alot of her stuff…nope!

He is one of the loudest babies ever – when he’s sleeping he chirps or hums or wheezes or grumbles or groans.  Or farts.  Amazing.

He seems relatively laid back and like his sister, is an observer.  So far his eyes are a deep blue.  Perhaps it’ll shift, perhaps not.

I was able to feel the baby kick today!  He/she was dancing a little jig for a little while.

Wow!

So many things, so little time to blog

leave a comment »

Lots of things have happened since my last blog post…I’m going to try and be better about posting – it’s really easy to fall off the wagon!

Kai has built up enough strength to sit up now for a few minutes at a time.  I learned the hard way today that I can’t just leave her sitting alone – I thought it’d be okay to run to the bathroom, but she ended up falling over and bonking her head pretty loudly.  This resulted in loud crying and general crankiness for Kai, and guilty feelings for me.

We’ve been on vacation, in California, where Kai had many firsts: first time in California, first time seeing the ocean, first time meeting Mommy’s friends from kindergarten and Mama’s friend from high school, first wedding, first vacation!  We stayed in a cabin and spent lots of time outdoors.  Kai charmed everybody she met and loved mingling.  One woman said that Kai made her ovaries tingly!

I love my ring sling. It tastes wonderful.

The ocean is nice, but I prefer staring at the camera

One of the couples from  our prenatal class had their baby shower today, which gave us a chance to all be in the same place at the same time.  Here’s the latest lineup with the youngest on the left and the oldest on the right…we’re waiting on one more baby!

The lineup, April 17, 2010

Another first today – Kai’s first crawfish boil!  I’m not sure she knew what was going on, other than the fact that we were at a party and there were lots of people to smile at.

Hrmm.

Life with a baby has been great so far.  It’s been challenging, but there is something new every day, and we still can’t stop gazing at her.  It seems like she’s changing so quickly these days – she’s really starting to figure out how to get things, get places, and loves engaging with people, dogs and fabric.

Another busy week

with 3 comments

Do you think this carseat makes my cheeks look big?

Another busy week!  Mrs Bean started working again this week, 3 mornings a week (I’ll be watching the bean during those times).  I have a new contract and start working again next week.  It’s too bad we can’t spend all our time together, but I suppose we ought to go out and make a living…

We went through her 0-3 clothes and put most of it away.  We’ve also discovered that some of her 3-6 month clothes need to get worn soon, before they’re too small!  Today’s clothes aren’t designed with cloth diapers in mind, so alot of pieces are too short in the torso.

What else happened?  We had brunch with a 7-month old friend of Kai’s.  He’s spinning on his belly and crawling now, and she’s fascinated.  Not enough to emulate him (yet), but enough to be totally entranced for a long long time.  We also took Kai to a movie for the first time yesterday – a morning baby day showing of Up in the Air – on baby days, the theatre turns down the volume a bit, and keep the lights on dim.  Great idea, except that the volume on the trailers was too loud, and there were some very scary trailers!  Kai slept through the whole movie!

Up next: Kai hits the 3 month mark this weekend!  Chinese New Year!  Lesbian mamas potluck!

10 pounds!

leave a comment »

Our little scrumptious bean is 10 pounds today!  She was weighed at the midwife’s office today (our last visit! sniff!) and she measured 21.5″ long.  She was a perfect angel during the visit, and did not cry or fuss.  This evening, though, she’s been really cranky and has needed to suck on my finger or Mrs Bean’s boob almost all night.  That’s what happens when she doesn’t get a good nap.

She’s really alert, and loves staring at her mobile.  She has started smiling socially, and also loves giving people a raised eyebrow.  She loves rubbing her hands together, and is also able to use hands to pull my finger into her mouth (and push it away from her when she’s done).

Sadly, she has a terrible case of cradle cap.  We’ve been applying almond or olive oil to her head every day, and scrubbing her scalp with a soft toothbrush, but it hasn’t been very effective.  Today, we added a drop of lavender oil to the olive oil.  I think we’re going to try a baking soda paste next.  We may need to resort to dandruff shampoo!  Her poor little head is all red and bumpy.  Poor baby 😦

We’re having a weird day

with one comment

Hopefully, this isn’t the start of a bunch of new habits, but it probably is. (Mrs Bean just looked over my shoulder and thought that was a pessimistic thought…well, how else should I put it?) Today, the little bean has slept for all of 30 minutes since we got out of bed at 10:30 (it’s 2:45 now). She doesn’t want to sleep, she’s not particularly hungry, and she’s really enjoying looking around. So, I think her days of just eating and sleeping are waning, and her days of being alert and active will start soon. But then again, what do I know? We have Touchpoints on hold at the library, and I will know more once I read it 🙂

Kai is 8lbs 5oz today, so she’s gained nearly 2lbs since her birth. At our 2 week checkup with the midwife, she had to have her head measured twice – our midwife couldn’t believe how much bigger her head was! She gained 1″ in head circumference! So, perhaps she’s not really losing hair, it’s just distributed over a larger surface area…

Kai has been having a problem with snot lately, so the suction bulb has been really handy. We’ve also injected breast milk up her nose using a 1ml syringe (we’re only using about 0.1-0.2ml per nostril) which has also helped with clearing up her nose. Sort of like using a neti pot, except the milk comes out the back of her mouth instead of the other nostril.
