Moving to a new city

with 2 comments

We’re moving.  Mrs Bean’s dad is sick so we’re heading to Atlanta next week.  Mrs Bean’s mom died last year and her teenaged sister will need company and support.  Mrs Bean’s sister is also planning on moving from SF.  A convergence!  Originally we’d planned for a mid-December move but his health has taken a turn so we’re moving earlier. We’re going to miss our friends and family and our routines and favorite places in Austin but I’m sure we’ll find new ones in Atlanta.

We broke the news to Kai just before Halloween that we were going to move and she’s had alot of questions and comments:

  • “but i want to sleep in my room”
  • “but i want yeye to come to my house”
  • “i worried about yeye nervous for yeye”

She also asked if yeye would still be sick when we go next week.  Mrs Bean said yes, and Kai asked if we could get him a new body  🙂

Kai is not the greatest with transition so we’re expecting the next couple months to be a tough time. At the same time she may surprise us all – she’s recently become much better with changes and new people.  This has corresponded with her becoming even more verbal and being able to express her feelings and desires very very specifically.  Avi, on the other hand, is preoccupied with drooling and trying to scoot.

Maybe after we’re done in Atlanta we’ll head to Canada  🙂  Might as well keep moving north, eh?

Dragon poop

with one comment

Lately, Kai has been working on making sure her dragon (a finger puppet, which she sometimes call her caterpillar) has a clean diaper.  To do this, she has to have the WHITE all-in-one and TWO wipes.  That’s the way it’s gotta be.  After wiping dragon’s butt with two cloth wipes, they go in her plastic shopping bag.  That is because they are very poopy and need to be in there until they can be put in the washing machine.  Then, dragon gets rolled up into the diaper, rocked, and kissed.

Chugging along

love!

Avi

  • 10lbs 11oz!  This boy is big!
  • Reflux – better now, but it still affects him
  • starting to hang out on the floor
  • very tolerant of the hugs and kisses from his big sister

Kai

She’s 2.  We deal with her ups and downs and ups and downs.  Lately:

  • she hasn’t needed to be physically handed off to her teacher when dropped off at school
  • she’s started sitting next to the teacher and hamming it up in music class
  • she loves talking to her reflection, they have entire conversations in the car.  There’s a big part of me that doesn’t want to turn the seat around (she’s still rear-facing) because I enjoy her conversations with herself so much

Kai and Avi – quick updates

with one comment

Kai

  • 36 inches
  • almost 30 pounds? maybe? We haven’t weighed her for awhile
  • favorite foods: corn, okra, tortillas, cheese, fruit leather, bunny crackers, watermelon
  • favorite sayings: “mama silly”, “I really know but I don’t know”, “Happy birthday to you… (etc.)”
  • recent activities: making bird feeders from toilet paper rolls, kidnapping Avi’s stuffed animals for her own purposes, taking Elmo around the block in her ministroller

Avi

  • 22 inches
  • 10lbs 4.5oz.  He’s bypassed all the newborn clothes we saved and looks pretty comfy in the 3month-sized clothes.
  • Reflux.  He just started on meds for reflux, poor guy.
  • favorite places: the swing, our bed
  • favorite activities: watching the world go by

Kai is very sweet to Avi, and will put her arm around him and give his head a pat.  She will try and talk to him (sometimes I respond in my “fake Avi” voice) but if anybody else talks to him, she will sternly say “Baby Avi no know how to talk, okay?”

We’ve had to carefully go through old clothes, out of Kai’s sight.  She’ll find something cute in the pile and will want to try it on.  Since she’s able to squeeze into some 6-month sized pieces, she thinks that hand-me-downs for Avi are fair game for her…sigh…we did let her wear her rocket shirt all weekend.  It was in the bin of dress-up clothes for her dolls.

Photos for June

with 3 comments

Has it really be almost 3 months since I’ve posted a picture?  Wow.

We’ve cut Kai’s hair – it’s hot here, she’s a sweaty kid and she hates hates hates getting her hair washed.

Choosing a flavour of “apple fruit”. She’s getting tall!

Pouring beans into cups.

A favorite activity – snacking and watching people

Another favorite activity – the splashpad. She doesn’t like getting water in her eyes, though.

Yet another favorite activity – the consumption of carbs. She finished that plate of bread then had some spaghetti.

Coffee, Wine and Badminton

with 4 comments

Lately Kai has been ogling my coffee and eyeing the wine in the house.  When she asks for some, we tell her she can’t have any until she’s bigger, which results in her wanting to confirm that she can try it when she’s bigger.

Kai (gesturing up high above her head): When Kai big big BIG I want some coffee some time.  Okay?
Me:sure, okay.

The other day we mentioned that I wouldn’t be doing bedtime because I was going to a meeting.

Kai: What meeting?
Me: My badminton meeting.
Kai: I want to do badminton when I big big BIG!
Me: Okay.    (thinking: hmmm, should I get a junior racket for her to play with? tie a string to a birdie and tie it to the ceiling for her to whack around?)

She has this idea that there will be so many things she can do once she gets bigger.  Which is true, but also makes me feel a little sentimental about the time before she knew she was getting bigger.  (insert slight tearing of the eyes here)
