Moving to a new city

with 2 comments

We’re moving.  Mrs Bean’s dad is sick so we’re heading to Atlanta next week.  Mrs Bean’s mom died last year and her teenaged sister will need company and support.  Mrs Bean’s sister is also planning on moving from SF.  A convergence!  Originally we’d planned for a mid-December move but his health has taken a turn so we’re moving earlier. We’re going to miss our friends and family and our routines and favorite places in Austin but I’m sure we’ll find new ones in Atlanta.

We broke the news to Kai just before Halloween that we were going to move and she’s had alot of questions and comments:

  • “but i want to sleep in my room”
  • “but i want yeye to come to my house”
  • “i worried about yeye nervous for yeye”

She also asked if yeye would still be sick when we go next week.  Mrs Bean said yes, and Kai asked if we could get him a new body  🙂

Kai is not the greatest with transition so we’re expecting the next couple months to be a tough time. At the same time she may surprise us all – she’s recently become much better with changes and new people.  This has corresponded with her becoming even more verbal and being able to express her feelings and desires very very specifically.  Avi, on the other hand, is preoccupied with drooling and trying to scoot.

Maybe after we’re done in Atlanta we’ll head to Canada  🙂  Might as well keep moving north, eh?

So many things, so little time to blog

leave a comment »

Lots of things have happened since my last blog post…I’m going to try and be better about posting – it’s really easy to fall off the wagon!

Kai has built up enough strength to sit up now for a few minutes at a time.  I learned the hard way today that I can’t just leave her sitting alone – I thought it’d be okay to run to the bathroom, but she ended up falling over and bonking her head pretty loudly.  This resulted in loud crying and general crankiness for Kai, and guilty feelings for me.

We’ve been on vacation, in California, where Kai had many firsts: first time in California, first time seeing the ocean, first time meeting Mommy’s friends from kindergarten and Mama’s friend from high school, first wedding, first vacation!  We stayed in a cabin and spent lots of time outdoors.  Kai charmed everybody she met and loved mingling.  One woman said that Kai made her ovaries tingly!

I love my ring sling. It tastes wonderful.

The ocean is nice, but I prefer staring at the camera

One of the couples from  our prenatal class had their baby shower today, which gave us a chance to all be in the same place at the same time.  Here’s the latest lineup with the youngest on the left and the oldest on the right…we’re waiting on one more baby!

The lineup, April 17, 2010

Another first today – Kai’s first crawfish boil!  I’m not sure she knew what was going on, other than the fact that we were at a party and there were lots of people to smile at.

Life with a baby has been great so far.  It’s been challenging, but there is something new every day, and we still can’t stop gazing at her.  It seems like she’s changing so quickly these days – she’s really starting to figure out how to get things, get places, and loves engaging with people, dogs and fabric.

wheee, bumbo!

with one comment

The bean is enjoying her new ability to sit upright.  The bumbo makes her spit up a bit, I think the post juts into her belly at a bad angle.  She’s also been watching us cook while sitting in her high chair.  Now, if we could only figure out a way for toys that get tossed on the floor to magically get themselves back up on the table/high chair, we’d be all set for a few more weeks.

More firsts

with 3 comments

The past couple weeks have been full of firsts.  Kai has started drooling like crazy, and rubbing her gums with her fingers.  We don’t feel any teeth yet, but they’re coming…  Teething tablets have helped with the pain, teethers keep her occupied and we’re going to get some breastmilk icecubes ready.

She has started to sit up on her own, for a minute or two.  She can gracefully fall to the side or to the front, but we don’t let her fall backwards!  Sitting up means that she can sit in her high chair at the table with us, so we’re getting rid of the swing and bouncy seat…gotta make space since we have a small house.  We’re going to spend some time (and money) at IKEA this weekend – it’s time to get things away from the floor and into bins or higher shelves.  Kai can scoot on her back now, and Mrs Bean found her under the coffee table the other day, pulling down papers.

I'm a big girl now!

Other firsts – Mrs Bean took Kai to the local pool for her first swim.  I’m sorry to have missed it, but I’m sure the next visit will be much like her first – she looked around in astonishment, then gave the world a giant smile and proceeded to flap flap flap her arms.

Kai went to her first Passover seder, and seemed to listen attentively to the stories.  It was an abbreviated seder – we were home by 9pm, and did NOT drink 4 glasses of wine.

Someday I will be able to eat this

Kai has also started ogling our food.  She’ll watch the spoon or fork go from the food to Mrs Bean’s mouth, and she’ll sometimes reach for it.  She’ll also open her mouth when I open my mouth while eating cereal.  I think she’s going to really enjoy eating food, and I can’t wait to take her on food adventures – the trailers and carts of Austin need to watch out – there is a cute and hungry baby preparing to unleash herself on them!

Toes and SXSW

with one comment

Kai had a big week – she’s discovered the joys of playing with and sucking her toes.  It’s much easier for her to get at her toes when she is diaper-less, so we’ve been letting her have some naked or almost naked time every day.

Why are you always trying to take my picture?

Mrs Bean has also been taking Kai to concerts this week.  SXSW is happening, which means lots of free outdoor day concerts.  I was able to go out on Friday and hang out.  There were lots of parents there with toddlers and babies, and somebody had set up a little wading pool for the kids to play in.  I’m not sure if she liked the music or not but she did attract some envious glances from hipsters who wished they had her shirt.

I want to be a hipster when I grow up

Oh, the baby Kai sent welcome vibes to last week arrived on March 15th, 2 days after Kai did some bellyrubbing!  Finally, there’s a little girl for Kai to hang out with.  We’ll have to get an updated line-up shot soon.

Four months!

with 2 comments

Kai had her 4 month check-up this week: she’s 25″ long, and weighs 12lbs 2oz.  She’ll be getting her first set of vaccinations at her 6 month check-up.  As a reward, Mrs Bean took her to happy hour where they had beer and pizza.  Just kidding.  It wasn’t a reward, but they did go to happy hour.

Other weekend activities included trying to get baby #5 from our lesbian prenatal group to come out.  The baby is due on March 16th.  Kai spent some time sending welcoming vibes to the baby, and rubbing our friend’s belly.

Come on out and play with me!

We also had a chance to get a line-up photo of babies 1-4 from the group.  Kai is the oldest one, but not the biggest one…Chulti is 2 weeks younger and outweighs her by a good 4 lbs.  The Boys (the twins) are 4 weeks old.

The line-up, March 2010

The big kids also got a chance to have tummy time together.

Check it out...

All in all, it was a fun weekend.  Now, if we could only convince Kai that she can sleep on her own (she kicks way too much for it to be easy to sleep with her), that’d be great…trying to change her sleep behavior is our latest project.
