Kai is almost 8 months old, and so much has happened in the past month:

  • Still no teeth. She has drool-y days and achy days but all we see are hints of teeth on her gums.  It does look like they’re a bit swollen, but nothing has emerged.
  • Food: She loves to chomp on asparagus and red/orange peppers.  She also likes sweet potato and avocado.  She’s had tastes of our foods at various times too, like potato salad, and fizzy water.  She love to ogle our food, and I think she’d try everything if she could.
  • Crawling: No crawling yet, but she’ll pull herself forward while lying on her belly.  She can get on all fours but can only move slightly backwards into a sitting position.
  • Pulling up, standing: She loves pulling up, mostly using our hands or legs, but she’ll try with toys and some furniture too.  She can get herself into standing position pretty quickly now, and she loves to stand.  Sometimes we can’t get her to sit down, she’ll stiffen up her legs when we try to put her down (and then complain about being on her back).
  • Singing and dancing: when she’s chatting, sometimes it’ll sound like she’s singing.  She has periods of warble-y cooing that are so adorable…I just want to squeeze her cheeks! When she’s sitting and you look her in the eye, wave you arms and chant “dance dance dance!” Kai will smile and wave her arms and shake her shoulders.  Very cute.  I need to figure out how to video record this – she has the ability to sense when a recording device is on, and will just stare into the lens.

As for us…we’re really enjoying this even though we’re both in need of rest (Mrs Bean in particular).  Kai isn’t a big fan of unlatching (who ever thought that would be a problem?) and has crazy intense dreams…she yells and cries and sighs and tosses and turns.  If she could sleep in her crib, this wouldn’t be so bad, but we haven’t been successful getting her to stay in there much longer than 20 minutes or so.

I’m writing this while lying on the sofa.  I’m so tempted to just close the lid to the laptop, curl up and close my eyes…

Real Poop

with 3 comments

Well, I wasn’t home for this, but Mrs Bean tells me that Kai had a real poop today – and to top it off, she pooped in the toilet!  (Mrs Bean thought Kai might need to poop, and tried holding her over the toilet.)

What is real poop?  Well, I can’t really say for sure, but I guess it’s poop that isn’t on the liquidy/pasty side.  I’m sure I’ll see an example soon…

Roll roll roll

with one comment

Kai still doesn’t have teeth!  I wonder how long those bumps will be there…the suspense!  🙂

These days, Kai’s thing is to roll back and forth.  Sometimes she’ll perform a slight rotation, so she can cover additional parts of the floor or bed.  She’s meandered under sofas, to the edge of the bed and can manage to roll over in both directions pretty well now.  She hasn’t figured out how to sit up, or pull up but she loves being on her feet, too, and can stand/balance upright for a few moments before grasping our hands.

Ahh…I suppose we should savor these last few days or weeks of having a relatively immobile child.   At the same time, she is so incredibly frustrated – she wants to crawl and move around so badly, but hasn’t gotten the hang of it just yet.  Today, I walked into the bedroom after hearing her cry out in the bedroom – she was on all fours, trying to figure out what to do!

In other news, she’s really liking solid foods.  She’s ingested avocado, grapes, sweet potato and bananas.  She’s chomped on red and yellow pepper and asparagus.  When she sits in her high chair, she’ll bounce up and down when we give her food – it’s incredibly cute.

Teething. Toofing, teefer toofers.

Kai is about to get some teeth!  She’s been sucking ice cubes, gnawing on toys, rubbing her tooth nubs  with her tongue and complaining loudly about the pain.  She’s also rolling over really well now, able to spin on her belly, and pushing up onto (almost) her arms and legs.  I bet she’ll be crawling soon.

This is amazing to watch, but at the same time it makes me a bit wistful – she’s growing up so quickly!

Mmmm. Ribbons.

I somehow got into this position...but I don't know what to do.

Luckily, there are some things that will take her mind off of her gums…like swimming.  She loves the water, and goes to the pool or a friend’s wading pool a couple times a week.  She like to flirt with lifeguards, and loves to splash.  She also likes it when I throw blocks in the air and drop them while saying Ooops!

I love water!

Sleep is still a tough issue for us.  Kai likes to eat every 1.5 hours or so at night so Mrs Bean doesn’t get to sleep very soundly.  Kai would also prefer to be on the boob the whole night, and complains when she’s taken off.  Me, I hear most of this, but I’m developing the ability to not wake up all the way when it happens.  Mrs Bean and I are generally a bit tired, her more so than me.  Kai, on the other hand, wakes up smiling.  Even with a 5 minute power nap.  Sigh.
